Poughkeepsie (population 33,000) is a city in the state of New York, and included in the New York metropolitan area. It lies in the Hudson Valley, about 100 km upriver on the Hudson from Manhattan. The indigenous Wappingers lived from Manhattan Island up to Poughkeepsie. The name derives from a word in the Wappinger language, meaning "the reed-covered lodge by the little-water place," referring to a spring feeding into the Hudson south of the present downtown area.
