Sevastopol, the second largest port in Ukraine, is located on the Black Sea coast of the Crimean peninsula. Due to its military history, under siege for 11 months in the Crimean War and then besieged by the Germans in WWll, most streets in the city are named after Russian and Soviet military heroes. There are hundreds of monuments and plaques throughout the city commemorating its military past. Visit the 19th century cathedral modelled on the Temple of Theseus in Athens, or take an excursion to the ancient Greek city-state of Khersonessos. With mild winters and moderately warm summers, it has grown into a popular tourist destination.

Downtown Sevastopol is situated on a peninsula between two narrow inlets, South Bay and Artillery Bay. The delightful architecture features mostly Mediterranean-style three-storey residential buildings with columned balconies and Ukraine and Venetian-style arches. Interestingly, the ground level of the buildings are retail and commercial spaces. These days the city is an important centre of marine biology research, especially in the training and study of dolphins. Some carefully restored landmarks date back to the early 20th C. Because of its unique history, as well as numerous monuments of architecture, and archaeology, Sevastopol is often called a museum-city.

Also of great interest are the Chersonessos National Archaeological Reserve with its museum and on-going excavations, and the Panorama Museum with its panorama of the city depicting the Crimean War. Then there’s the Admiral’s burial vault, the Black Sea Fleet Museum, and the White Tower of Malakhov Kurgan. Join the locals and take a leisurely stroll through the downtown area along the avenues and boulevards encircling the Central Hill. Enjoy being under the famous Sevastopol chestnut trees while visiting the famous Marine Boulevard along the waterfront. During the summer there are numerous playgrounds, bars, restaurants, and clubs that are open to tourists. .
