In the SE West Indies is Scarborough, the chief town, administrative centre, and deepwater harbour of Tobago, one of the two islands of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. Located on Rockly Bay and overlooking Scarborough Harbour, the town is steeply laid out on the bottom slopes of a hill 13 km from the island’s southwestern tip. On top of the hill is Fort King George (built by the British in the late 1700s), with a prison, barracks, officer’s mess, and many cannons. It also includes a museum of Tobago’s history, a craft shop, the National Fine Arts Centre, and above all, fabulous views.

The commercial centre of the island, renowned for great shopping, is one of the town's main attractions. You can easily see all the town's sights on foot. Scarborough is the departure point for route taxis serving the whole of the island, so ask a local to point you to the appropriate stand. A popular place for visitors is Turtle Beach, where turtles are to be seen at times, but that also offers spectacular snorkelling and diving. It is recommended to anyone who loves swimming, and for meeting helpful locals.

The Scarborough Market is popular with locals, but visitors are captivated by its vibrant atmosphere and friendly vendors. Just a short distance from town is the Cotton House, a quaint little colonial home filled with gifts, handicrafts and the stunning batik works that puts a Caribbean touch to this Indonesian art. To see what wonderful products can be created from raw materials such as coconuts and sea shells, be sure to visit Tabago Treasures. If it is air-conditioned comfort visitors are looking for, then visit the Chadija’s Souvenir and Gift Shop on the first floor of the NIB Mall.
