Located on the Mediterranean Sea, Monastir is a city on the central coast of Tunisia. It captures a blend of the traditional and modern that characterises of its country. Traditionally a fishing port, it is now a major tourist centre. Founded on the ruins of the Punic–Roman city of Ruspina, the city features the well preserved Forte el Ribat that offers fantastic views, and provides an overview of the local history. It was used to scan the sea for hostile ships and was used as a filming location for ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’. Today the city boasts thriving resorts along the shining beaches, and offers access to the picturesque historic medina in nearby Sousse, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Just 9km from Monastir's town centre is the holiday resort of Skanes that is frequented throughout the summer by tourists from around the world.

Skanes is a nearby holiday resort known mostly for its professional golf courses, never-ending strips of white, sandy beaches, clear blue sea, and hotels that fuse Moorish architecture with modern designs. Here it is possible to sample fresh Tunisian cooking. The Bourghiba Mausoleum is a beautiful, majestic, building and gives visitors a good insight to the history of the country. The Gallery Espressioni is a great place to come and engage with the local culture - fascinatingly many locals can speak up to 5 languages - have something to eat, and see the best art and hand-made items and souvenirs.
