Gabes, located on the coast of the Mediterranean, is the capital city of a province in Tunisia. It is home to two oases, one at the seaside and one by the desert. Indeed, Gabes - predominantly a modern town - is unique as it is home to mountains, sea, a seaside oasis, and the desert. Visitors can tour the oasis around Gabes by car or by horse-drawn carriage, known locally as a caleche, and see numerous small settlements. The most visited of the oasis villages is Chenini du Gabès, which is famed for its beautiful basketwork. Here too is a small zoo of desert animals, including gazelles, crocodiles and various species of birds.
