Gabes, located on the coast of the Mediterranean, is the capital city of a province in Tunisia. It is home to two oases, one at the seaside and one by the desert. Indeed, Gabes - predominantly a modern town - is unique as it is home to mountains, sea, a seaside oasis, and the desert. After a stroll along Avenue Habib Bourguiba, the main shopping and business street, visit the Grande Jara, and the souk quarter around the Great Mosque. There is also the opportunity of seeing a demonstration of carpet making, and some fine craft products are for sale. Visitors can tour the oasis around Gabes by car or by horse-drawn carriage, known locally as a caleche, and see numerous small settlements. The most visited of the oasis villages is Chenini du Gabès, which is famed for its beautiful basketwork. Here too is a small zoo of desert animals, including gazelles, crocodiles and various species of birds.

At El Aouadid there is a crocodile farm open to visitors. There are also some attractive beaches, especially south of the city, the most popular of which is Lemawa beach. Many appreciate visiting the Mosque of Sidi Boulbaba with its beautifully decorated courtyard, and the 11th C Mosque of Sidi Driss that was restored in 1972. There is also a Museum in Gabes that highlights popular traditions. Not to be forgotten is Matmata - just 45km south of Gabes – that is the best known village in Tunisia due to its underground dwellings, built into the eastern slopes of the 650m high Dahar uplands.

While Matmar Nouvelle is now the centre of the region, be sure to travel the extra 15km through the cratered landscape of the old village to visit the intriguing underground cave dwellings that villagers built to shelter from the sun. These dwellings are still inhabited by families, and some have been converted into simple hotels.
