Ko Tarutao (“Oldest Island” – from Malay) lies 20 km west of Southern Thailand, halfway down the west side of the Malay Peninsula, in the Andaman Sea. Ko Tarutao island is the largest (at 26 km by 10 km) of 51 islands in Tarutao National Marine Park, and is mostly covered by old-growth rain forest. Its mangrove swamps, limestone cliffs and caves are very impressive. It is one of the most unspoiled islands in Andaman Sea and in all of Thailand. The island has an interesting history, particularly during WWII when the guards and prisoners of the island’s penal colony united to become pirates in the Strait of Malacca.

The park headquarters are on the NW side of the island. Walk or cycle around the inland tracks for birdwatching, and beaches for collecting shells. Ta Lo Wow Bay is on the NE side of the island, Pante Malacca Bay is on the northwest side, and Son Bay (200m long) on the W side is where turtles lay their eggs – and you can watch the sunset. Behind the park headquarters at Malacca Bay is a 20-minute trail leading to Toe-Boo Cliff, with fabulous views. Pantaemaraka Gulf has many pine trees and a clean white beach. From there take a long-tail boat to Crocodile Cave which is 300m deep.

Wildlife enthusiasts on their hikes or cycling may meet crab-eating macaques, wild boar, snakes (python, pit viper or cobra), butterflies, lizards, a variety of birds including hornbills, flying lemur, otter and langur. The calm waters invite snorkelling, but there are better sites off other islands. The prison camp for civilian prisoners was on Ko Tarutao's isolated eastern coast, 12km southeast of Ao Pante Malacca. The 5th season of the television show Survivor was filmed on Ko Tarutao.
