The Similan Islands lie 100 km to the NW of Phuket, off the west coast of Thailand, in the Andaman Sea. They consist of six small islands and a few even smaller ones, spread north-to-south in a line over 23 km, all part of the Mu Ko Similan National Park. Arguably uninhabited, the islands feature white sandy beaches, thick tree cover of gums and ironwood, and fauna that includes monkeys, squirrels, bats, lizards, and various bird life. The southern and western shores feature giant smooth boulders that extend well beneath the sea. Off shore you’ll see many small vessels hired by tourists and under-water dive enthusiasts.

Over 200 varieties of hard coral are a major attraction, amid undersea caves and canyons, accompanied by reef fish. Enjoy snorkelling or scuba diving in the still sea, with excellenbt visibility. Increasing in popularity is just sailing the waters of the archipelago, anchoring at the many blue-white-green inlets, and picnicking. The islands are open only from mid-November to mid-May (due to native turtle breeding). Hire a boat from Phuket, but allow up to three hours to get there, and be sure you arrange for your return trip.

Interestingly, Similan comes from the Malay Sembilan meaning Nine, though you’ll be hard-pressed to find nine islands in the group. Travellers report on the cleanliness of the islands, the impressive sea life (dolphins, turtles, reef fish and so on), and vivid blue waters defined by rocky shores and stark white beaches. You’ll have to find a spot away from other tourists if you want solitude. The massive 2004 tsunami originated 400 to the west, but left the islands unharmed as they drop off quickly to deep sea. Skin-Diver Magazine has included the Similans in the ten most beautiful places in the world.
