Cruises visiting Lome & all Lome cruises for  2020

View Lome 2020 cruises for 2 ships listing 6 cruises from Lome with today's best deals!

Lome is the capital of Togo, West Africa. Located on the Gulf of Guinea, it is the country's administrative and industrial centre and its chief port. The dock is not within walking distance to town, so shuttle buses are provided. A local drum band and several dancers greet visitors with a performance at the gangway. White beaches are lined with hotels, while the interior of the city offers a series of markets for avid shoppers. Best known of these would be the Grand Marche for its colourful Togo fabrics, delightful jewellery sold from shops that are attached to their respective manufacturing units, and the Fetish Market that sells ‘protections from evil’.

For relaxed shopping with no pressure to buy, visit the Village Aartisanal to see the artisans at work with tie dye and batik through to leather work. The German Cathedral, with its carved pews and wall paintings, offers a glimpse into Togo’s colonial past, as do the Goethe Cultural Centre and the Pasteur Library. Other sites include the mosque and the interesting national and historic artefacts at the National Museum. Famous for the friendliness of its people and the beauty of its countryside, Lome is the perfect place to relax. Visitors often return home with a sample of the work of the extremely proficient goldsmiths.

Togo is one of the smallest countries of Africa (550km by 1230km). Its official language is French. In the 15th C it was known as “The Slave Coast”. By the early 20th C it was the German colony Togoland, and cultivation of cocoa, coffee and cotton was developed. After WWI the eastern part became French Togoland, and in 1960 the independent Togolese Republic. The coast consists of lagoons and sandy beaches; inland is savanna and woodland, with giraffes, cape buffalo, hyenas, and lions – few elephants. Phosphate and agricultural exports support its economy, and tourism is growing. For a souvenir, look for batik.
