Lysekil is a fishing and ferry port in Västra Götaland County in western Sweden. This small fishing village of just 7000 faces the Skagerrak, a strait leading to the Baltic Sea and which is one of the busiest shipping routes in the world. Eight kilometres to the north is Sweden’s largest oil refinery and a port that takes 500,000 DWT tankers. Lysekil is known for Lysekil Caviar (Creamed Smoked Roe). It is a popular tourist destination with nearby sandy beaches, nature park and an aquatic museum.

To the east is one of Sweden's most distinctive fjords, Gullmarn fjord 25 km long, between 1-3 km wide, with a maximum depth of 120 meters but a shallow 20 meters at the mouth, leading to a distinctive marine life in the fjord. This is a major summer tourist destination. Gullmaren is currently Sweden's only marine nature preservation area. Many islets are like small communities by themselves, with interesting histories of trading, fishing and stone quarrying in addition to their scenic nature.

From Lysekil take a two hour walk to the coast and the famous Whitehouse. There’s a small beach, red dressing-room cabins and small marina. Walk the coastal path over rock slabs, enjoy the scenery overlooking many tiny islands, contemplate the meaning of life, on a highly recommended moderate hike. On the way back to the port call at the small aquarium at Havets Hus. The 200-year old town with its brightly coloured wooden houses and narrow streets is worth strolling around.
