The Poivre (Pepper) Islands are a group of islands lying 270 km SW of the capital Victoria on Mahé, the Seychelles’ main island. They are located in the Amirante group of coral islands and atolls that belong to the Outer Islands of the Seychelles. There are four islands on the reef, the two larger islands joined at low tide by a 750 m causeway. There’s a small village on Poivre Nord for caretakers and conservationists, who also maintain the 1100 m grass airstrip that just fits across the island. Alongside the modern houses are the remnants of buildings from a past era. Small vessels can approach the north island via a boat channel, making wet landings possible.

The residents farm and keep livestock for their own sustenance. Coconut palm plantations show evidence of the past value of this trade (imagine, up to 130,000 nuts per month!). Today most visitors arrive on organised fishing trips, as its waters support a great variety of species. (Sixty kilometres to the west is the 5 km deep Amirantes Trench, that lends itself to rich currents and an abundance of various fish species.) Bird life includes blue heron, Chinese heron, whimbrels, fodys, greater frigates, noddies and terns. The beaches are nesting sites for hawksbill and green turtles.

Incidentally, the French horticulturalist and botanist Pierre Poivre, after whom the island is named, is thought to be the subject of the English-language nursery rhyme beginning “Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers . . .” Poivre had once investigated the Seychelles' potential for spice cultivation.
