Cosmoledo Atoll is one of four atolls and islands (Assumption, Aldabra, Astove, and Cosmoledo) in the Aldabra Group, part of the Outer Islands of the Seychelles. Actually, Cosmoledo is far closer to Madagascar and the African mainland than to the capital, Victoria, on Mahé Island. Cosmoledo Atoll is a raised atoll with two main and about 18 smaller islets. It is 17 km long E-W and 14 km N-S. inside the atoll is a large lagoon of 145 sq.km. Two main passes lead from the ocean to the shallow lagoon (up to 8 metres deep).

On the western coast of Menai Island elevated reef rock forms undercut headlands separated by sandy beaches. There are sand dunes in the north and south, rising to about 10 meters. The SE passage is between Pagoda Island and Wizard Island. Menai Island on the west coast is sandy. Johannes Point, the NW extremity of Menai island, is conspicuous. An abandoned village is located at this point. There are areas of tall mangrove, especially on the lagoon side of Menai Island. Coconuts are common only on Menai, where many were planted.

Cosmoledo is an Important Bird Area and holds Seychelles' largest colonies of all three species of booby. The lagoon is an important feeding ground for migratory waders. The reefs are spectacular and offer some of the best diving in Seychelles. The Island Conservation Society has carried out conservation and rehabilitation work on the atoll, including the eradication of introduced rats and cats on several islands. Walk across the vast, wadeable sand flats. Fishing is great for giant trevally among others, and anglers are attracted from world wide.
