Torokina (‘Little Island’) is a small village at the northern limits of Empress Augusta Bay on the mid-west coast of Bougainville Island, the largest of the Solomon Islands. Bougainville is geographically part of the Solomon Islands archipelago but politically part of Papua New Guinea. The village lies on the coast at Cape Torokina, adjacent to two small islands off-shore. Bougainville was occupied by Japanese troops in mid-1942 and was intended to form an important forward outpost of the Japanese Empire. Read more

On 1 Nov 1942 the bay was the site of a major US naval battle to enable a successful US marine landing against fortified Japanese positions at Cape Torokina. A strategically important US and Australian base and airfield followed.
