Tyuleny Island, a small island measuring just 650m in length and 120m in width, is situated at the southern end of the Terpeniya Peninsula in the Sea of Okhotsk, off eastern Sakhalin coast of Russia. Beaches give way to a 50m high rocky ridge running the length of the crescent island. Though the island is uninhabited there are a few timbered buildings there. During winter the sea is covered with ice floes, and subject to severe weather and fogs. During the 19th C the region was a centre for whaling. Administratively, Tyuleny Island belongs to Russia, and its name means ‘seal’ in Russian.

It is not surprising that it is renowned for the numerous fur seals on its shores and its surrounding waters. During breeding season the numbers defy counting. As fur seals are listed as both vulnerable and depleted by various animal-welfare authorities, it is encouraging to see a fur seal breeding site on the island. In the spring and summer seabirds nest on the island, including crested, parakeet and rhinoceros auklet, common and thick-billed murre, black-legged kittiwake, ancient murrelet, and tufted puffin.

The island as a nature reserve is notable for its colony of fur seals. Sea lions are also found here by the thousands, as are Common and Thick-billed Murres. The island is a major breeding ground for Northern Fur Seals and Stella Sealions. Landing parties often have the opportunity of seeing as many as 1000 sea lions with 200 pups in a day, and in the peak season there will also be over 100,000 Northern Fur Seals congregated here. Since parts of the islands are marshy, there are also many birds.
