Savoogna is a small settlement (population 670) on St Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea, in the state of Alaska. It lies 120km from Russia to the NW, and 260km from Nome on the Alaskan mainland to the NE. St Lawrence Island is roughly 140km by 36km, and thought to be one of the last exposed portions of the land bridge that once joined Asia with North America. The other village on the island is Gambell. The US-Russian boundary is to the west of St Lawrence Island. Close to the north is the narrow and shallow (30-50m) Bering Strait.

In winter the Bering Strait is subject to severe storms and ice to 1.5m thick; in mid-summer it is covered with drift ice. The sea to the south is open (a polynya). The island has no trees, and the only woody plants are Arctic willow, standing no more than a foot (30 cm) high. The island's abundance of seabirds and marine mammals is due largely to the influence of the Anadyr Current, an ocean current which brings cold, nutrient-rich water from the deep waters of the Bering Sea shelf edge. The settlement calls itself the "Walrus Capital of the World".

Whale, seal, walrus, and reindeer comprise 80% of islanders’ diets. Due to the island’s isolation, most residents are bilingual — Siberian Yup’ik is still the first language, English the second. The local economy consists largely of subsistence hunting for walrus, seals, fish, and bowhead whales. Indigenous Yupik people (Eskimos) are known for their skill at carving, and are legally able to sell fossilised ivory and other artefacts from the island. The sale, importation, and possession of alcohol is banned in the village.
