Russkiya Bay on the east coast of Kamchatka Peninsula in the Russian Far East, has everything that makes this one of the world’s ‘last true wildernesses’. At the right time of the year there is often a blue-sky day, which together with snow-flecked volcanoes, and marine creatures that accompany the Zodiac as it motors slowly towards the black sand beach, all ensure a most memorable experience. Gorelya volcano looms above the valley which, if carpeted in yellow flowers, promises a close encounter with a bear.

Take a walk with a group of fellow travellers and head inland through tall grass, and on the way notice the andesite porphyry bedrock in the area that contains interesting olivine nodules, complete with reaction halos. Perhaps, follow the stream for a while and notice the few salmon returning home for the completion of their reproductive cycle, and eventual death. Part of Earth’s history is written in Russia. Join explorer ships such as L’Austral to discover the origins of the world, where fire, land and the ocean have created an untamed paradise which is still free and almost forgotten.

At the beginning of the Great Patriotic War and increased danger of the sailing at Kamchatka waters, the bay “Russian” became one of the main stations of the forming caravans from cargo ships, with strategic goods en route from the ports of Canada and the United States to Vladivostok. You could come to Kamchatka for its wild things alone. Almost every day visitors see grey whales feeding - 23 humpbacks on one occasion - or Dall's porpoises riding the ship's bow wave.
