The Komandorsky Islands, in the North Pacific, are located 175 km east of the Kamchatka Peninsula in the Russian Far East. They are included into the Komandorsky State Natural Reserve, and one of the most preserved areas of the region. There are two large islands, Bering and Medny; and two small ones, Ariy Kamen and Toporkov. The relief is somewhat diverse, encompassing folded-block mountains, volcanic plateaus, terraced plains, and low mountains. The geologic origins are long-extinct volcanoes on the edge of the Pacific and North American Plates. Sea giants or whales inhabit waters along the Komandorsky Islands shores.

The only permanently inhabited locality is the village of Nikolskoye on the NW of Bering Island. The population consists almost entirely of Russians and Aleuts. The economy is based primarily on fishing, mushroom gathering, administration of the natural preserve, ecotourism, and government services. Northern fur seals are undoubtedly the main sight and wealth of the Komandorsky Islands. Thousands of them occupy the northern and north-west parts of Bering Island. Numerous large colonies of nesting seabirds are protected along coastal cliffs on most of the coasts of the four islands. Here, where sheer cliffs plunge into the Bering Sea, nearly a million seabirds gather.
