Novi Sad, Serbia's second largest city after Belgrade, is located on the border of the Backa and Srem regions, on the banks of the Danube river between Budapest and Belgrade. Founded in 1694, Novi Sad is a treasured regional and cultural centre and has earned its nickname ‘Serbian Athens’. Second only to Belgrade, Novi Sad is a major cultural centre and a growing venue for numerous cultural events and music concerts. There is a tourist port near the Varadin Bridge in the city centre, welcoming various river cruise vessels from across Europe that cruise the Danube River.

Best known for the Petrovaradin fortress, an amazing collection of buildings that include cafes, three restaurants, art studios and living spaces for artists, as well as underground military corridors to name but a few, is a definite ‘must-see’. Other popular sights include the Old Town Hall right on the main city square, the wonderfully preserved old castle the Dvorac Dundjerski, the beautiful Novi Sad Synagogue, and both the Orthodox and Catholic churches.

The largest collection of foreign art in Serbia, together with sculptures and period furniture, is found at The Foreign art collection Museum and is appreciated by many. Take a stroll along the city’s imposing boulevards and along the Danube River, sit down at one of the cafes and do some people watching, and in Summer, be sure to visit ‘Strand’ that is considered the most beautiful sand beach on the Danube River.
