St Denis, surrounded by mountains on three sides, is the northernmost city and the capital of Réunion Island, in the Indian Ocean. It is also the most populous commune of the French overseas departments. Interesting cultural sites include museums such as Le Musée Léon-Dierx that boasts works by such famous artists as Picasso and Gaugin, and Le Muséum d'histoire naturelle de La Réunion - set in the public gardens - that has fascinating exhibits of indigenous animals past and present. If interested in architecture, then explore the unique Creole Homes that dominate the town, and you will find a few that are open to the public for tours.

Visitors are generally attracted to the delightful beaches or walking up a volcano, but the town itself has plenty to offer. Perhaps take a taxi or hire a car and travel the 15 km to La Roche Écrite, the summit overlooking St. Denis, for impressive views of the city. If you enjoy dining you will try the diverse cuisine that runs the gamut from traditional Creole to Indo-Muslim to Chinese specialties! Réunion will also delight you with the natural, warm welcome of its population, and the variety of the local food’s spicy flavours, from curry to rougaille, will gratify even the most gourmet appetites.

Réunion's capital Saint-Denis and the lagoons of St-Gilles-les Bains also attract tourists. The Domaine du Grand Hazier, an 18th-century home of a sugar planter and official French historical monument, has a large garden with fruit trees and tropical flowers. Festivals take place year round throughout the island. Another tourist attraction is the active shield volcano Piton de la Fournaise, one of the most active volcanoes in the world. The collapsed calderas of Cirque de Cilaos, Cirque de Mafate, and Cirque de Salazie also draw tourists. There is good surfing off the island's west coast.
