Palau is an island nation of Micronesia in the Western Pacific Ocean, 900 km east of the Philippines and 900 km north of Indonesian Papua. This small republic of several islands has as main commercial centre Koror, the nation's former capital and largest town, on Koror Island, where two thirds of the population dwell. The Republic of Palau is one of the world's youngest and smallest nations, but it offers you some of the world's most beautiful tropical paradise. The new capital is Melekeok, located on the island of Babeldaob, and is a pleasant drive from Koror across a fascinating and modern bridge.

To get around, taxis are available for hire, but not having meters, prices must be negotiated beforehand. Island tours are available and as half the roads are unpaved, this could be the best option. In town are some small museums, specialty shops, night markets, and outdoor aquarium. Dolphins Pacific, the world's largest dolphin research facility, is open for tourists who are interested in swimming and interacting with trained dolphins. On land you will enjoy the whitest of beaches for swimming, kayaking, fishing, and snorkelling, also beautiful lakes, the forests and waterfalls, and the caves that have never been spoiled by man.

A few kilometres SW of Koror are the Rock Islands – an absolute must – like green mushrooms sitting on a turquoise sea, added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2012. As one tourist said, ‘The Islands are beautiful, the reefs world class, and the snorkeling fantastic. . . the coral is so healthy and so many fish.’ Palau is rated as one of the world's best diving destinations by scuba aficionados, with unspoiled reefs, caves, and walls with one of the world's greatest concentrations of coral, fish, and other marine life. Interestingly, Palauan society follows a very strict matrilineal system.
