Cruises visiting Wewak & all Wewak cruises for  2019-2020-2021

View Wewak 2019-2020-2021 cruises for 2 ships listing 4 cruises from Wewak with today's best deals!

Wewak is the capital of the East Sepik province, located on the northern coast of New Guinea, 300 km east of the border with Indonesian province of Papua. The original town lies on a small peninsula, and has spread to the east between the beach and a low coastal range. The airport is on the edge of town further east, and the main wharf juts 450m out into the bay. Wewak is a peaceful seaside town bordered by an incredible jungle and gorgeous panoramas. You may be able to drive the 8 km up to Wewak Hill (500m), from which the view of the coast and islands is truly amazing.

Historically, Wewak is of great interest, as nearby Cape Wom was the site of the largest Japanese air base in New Guinea during WWII, and now houses a memorial that is well worth visiting. Here also was the site of the surrender of Japanese forces in New Guinea on 13 September 1945. Today Wewak is the starting point for the 90 km drive to the Sepik River. In town, stroll through the market and take in the relaxing, restful, tropical, atmosphere, as you get to know the friendly locals. The Vanilla Room is ‘the best restaurant in town’ in the old town area. Recent reports, however, urge caution and personal safety when walking.

Search out for Sepik carvings. Drive to Ralf Stüttgen’s Place at Tower where there’s a good collection. Wewak’s beaches are excellent, with long stretches of sand that fall away gently under the water. The water is clean and clear, warm and very inviting. There’s excellent snorkelling around the Wewak headland, over the outer reef and off the nearby islands. Like many coastal places in PNG, the diving conditions around Wewak are sensational – reefs, wrecks, tropical fish – but there’s no organised diving industry in Wewak.
