The Trobriand Islands (aka the Kiriwina Islands) are an archipelago of coral atolls off the E coast of Papua New Guinea in Milne Bay Province. Most of the 12,000 indigenous inhabitants live on the main island Kiriwina, the location of the government station, Losuia. Other major islands are Kaileuna, Vakuta, and Kitava. The archipelago is an important tropical rainforest eco-region in need of conservation. The islands lie in the Solomon Sea, where major battles were fought during WWII. You will be treated to elaborate and breath-taking dances performed by men, women and children. Do your own trading for artefacts, including ebony carvings inlaid with mother-of-pearl, masks, and shell jewellery.

The Massim society of Trobriander Islanders produce some of the most detailed and sought-after ebony carvings and artefacts in the region. They have a culture that traces family lineage through mothers rather than fathers, have unusual customs, such as eating privately, or turning their backs on each another and eating quickly so as not to be observed. Sexual practices are unique, and traditional magic spells are intricately woven into daily life. Yams are their currency, also Kula necklaces and arm bands, though visitors buy items using money. Betel nut is commonly eaten causing teeth to become red.

Life here has changed for centuries, unaffected by external influences. The first European visitor to the islands was the French ship Espérance in 1793, later followed by missionaries, schools and colonialists. Cricket was introduced in 1903 by a missionary with the hope of reducing tribal rivalry and fighting. Today they play a very different game with 40 or more players, with dances and chanting, modified bats and balls and the home team is always the winner! The game replaced inter-island warfare which was forbidden by colonialists. Visitors will be welcomed by colourfully-dressed locals with their intriguing customs, as they alight on the white sandy beaches
