Fergusson Island, the largest island of the D'Entrecasteaux Islands, Papua New Guinea, lies 50 km across Ward Hunt Strait from the SE tip of New Guinea, in the Solomon Sea. It has an area of 1,437 km2, and mostly consists of mountainous regions, covered by stunning tropical bush. The principal settlements, Salamo and Mapamoiwa, are on the southern coast. Visitors are welcomed by a group of village men who paddle out in traditional handmade canoes to accompany you to shore. Here you are met by friendly villagers who happily show you around, introduce you to their family members, offer you their food, and encourage you to try your hand at their local crafts.

An extinct volcano, the prehistoric Fergusson Island, makes you feel as though time has stood still. Just a 30-minute walk from the small on-shore village - keep a lookout for the wildlife and birdlife - will take you to the steaming, bubbling geysers of Dei-Dei Hot Springs. A true feast for the eyes, the boiling lakes and hot springs are totally mesmerising and it is important to remember to watch where you are stepping. Stay on the designated pathway.

Also to be seen are the locals who still cook in the tradition of their ancestors by preparing all meals in the boiling pools. If time permits other places of great interest include: other geothermal areas on the island such as Iamelele, which contains lava domes, boiling springs, mud pools, and fumaroles; and the Lamonai volcano, consisting of a composite cone with a summit crater located where there is strong thermal activity.
