In the Bismarck Sea is Crown Island, a small circular island 4 km in diameter, situated 75 km off the north coast of Madang Province in Papua New Guinea. The island is the highly eroded remnant of a dormant volcano, reaching an elevation of just 298 m above sea level. From the peak it falls through a series of valleys and ridges covered in rain forest, to the low-lying coastal regions where fringing reefs are found. This sparsely inhabited island – just three families – is a turtle-nesting ground and home of the giant lizard. It is great to explore the beaches of this seldom-visited island.

Crown Island Sanctuary (1978) occupies the whole island. Sea shells are collected from Crown Island only by people with traditional rights. Due to its remoteness and beauty, it is a popular diving and snorkelling site. The untouched reefs at Crown Island are home to giant dogtooth tuna, sharks, sea whip and sea fans gardens. You may be able to visit Hanikow Reef, between Crown Island and Bagabag Island, which truly is big fish country.

Crown Island was actually named by William Dampier sailing in the Roebuck in 1700, after the profile of its interior. The island was further investigated by notable French explorer D’Urville (c. 1826) in his ship Astrolabe. Just 12 km to the SE is the much larger Long Island, with its two dormant strato-volcanoes rising to 500 m.
