Bagabag Island is located in the Madang province of Papua New Guinea. It lies approximately 64 km NE of Madang and directly SE of the larger Karkar Island. The island is roughly circular with a diameter of 7 km. Volcanic in origin, terrain on Bagabag consists of steep, thickly vegetated slopes rising to 618 m on the N side of the island. Much of the northern, eastern and southern coasts are fringed by a barrier-type reef some 2 km offshore. The reef is narrow and mostly submerged.

Bagabag’s volcano is currently dormant, though it lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire. The prominent feature of the coast is New Year Bay, which cuts into the heart of the caldera that rises on three sides. Most popular with visitors is snorkelling and diving, as the fringing reefs teem with fish, turtles, sharks and dolphins. The corals in this region are outstanding. The area is also renowned for its endless walls of sea fans. Dive operators have been visiting these world-renowned reefs for some time now, and are currently working with the Bagabag Islanders to introduce tourists to their unique way of life.

Fishing for pelagic fish in the strong currents of these waters is excellent. Take the opportunity to visit one of the four villages on the island. Some ships have a helicopter that provides travellers with the opportunity to explore the surrounding area and nearby Karkar Island and its 1800 m volcano 35 km to the WNW.
