Rangiroa, also known as The Endless Lagoon, is a coral atoll in the Tuamotu Archipelago of French Polynesia. It lies 325 km to the NE of Tahiti. The lagoon is 80 km long and rather narrower, with two main sea passages to the ocean at the northern end. With a land area of only 170 km², it surrounds the third largest lagoon in the world. Known for its incredibly clear turquoise and jade-green waters and abundant sea life, it is a mecca for divers and snorkellers. Scuba diving is breathtaking in and around the Tiputa passage, frequented by dolphins, sharks, manta rays and turtles.

There are two main villages on the atoll, Avatoru and Tiputa, which with their tiny shops, coral churches, craft centres and local restaurants, certainly provide a unique land-based experience. Also on the island is one of the largest pearl farms in French Polynesia, where you can learn the secrets of cultivating this beautiful gem through seeing the grafting and harvesting procedures used. The tour to the Blue Lagoon – a smaller lagoon at the edge of the main lagoon – is also a great trip.

The atoll itself consists of 415 islets and sand bars no more than a metre in elevation, and from the air Rangiroa appears to be a giant pearl necklace spread over the water. There’s a domestic airfield and hotels at Avatoru serving tourists seeking underwater adventures. For those who love snorkelling be sure to ride the current flowing in or out of the lagoon through one of the main passages. Don’t expect to see a lot of coral. Learn about the breeding of pearl oysters in the lagoon that can produce black pearls: actually with a wide range of colours that have become synonymous with French Polynesia. Fishing and viticulture are other industries.
