Kirin Greenland did a great job at organising this little get away for us and I would definitely ask Kirin again when we do more cruises in the future."

Cruises visiting Sur & all Sur cruises for  2019

View Sur 2019 cruises for 1 ships listing 1 cruises from Sur with today's best deals!

Sur, on the coast of the Gulf of Oman in NE Oman, lies 150 km SE of the capital Muscat. To the far north of the Gulf is Afghanistan, and to the west the United Arab Emirates. Sur has long been known as an important destination of sailors trading between East Africa and India. Today, as for centuries previously, it is renowned as a major dhow-building centre. It is a quiet town, which has a genuine Arabic feel, and where you can wander amongst the locals and absorb the local culture. Inland the Al Hajar Mountains separate the coastal plain from the high desert plateau.

Sur has of course a hot dry climate, though interestingly is subject to cyclones from the Arabian Sea. The landscape is rocky, brown, with occasional low shrubs; and 60 or so kilometres inland begin the typical rippled sand dunes that identify with a desert. Sunaysilah Fort is one of the forts in Sur, located very near to the Pizza Hut. It contains historical rifles, pottery, cutlery, and jewellery, items that you can touch and hold. Also there is a prison, a mosque, a Koran school, and even a cooking area. Visit the Marine Museum, showing the history of Omani ships.

Wadi Shab 50 km NW of Sur is well worth a visit – one must see a wadi with its cool clear waters and plantations. On the way see the mountains and canyons, and Hawiyat Najam (Sinkhole) believed to be caused by a falling asteroid. Perhaps plan for turtle watching, within a one-hour drive along the Wahiba Sands. An alternate option to see the turtles is to visit the Ras Al Jinz Scientific & Visitor Centre. The Ras al Hadd Castle, though some 46 km from Sur, was built in 1570 and is also a popular destination. English is the business language of the area.
