The Snares (named as shipping hazards) lie 100 km SW of New Zealand’s southernmost point on Stewart Island. The Snares Islands consist of the main North East Island, smaller Broughton Island, and a number of rocky stacks. The group is volcanic in origin, has a total land area of just two sq.km., and their highest point is 130m. North East Island is bounded by coastal cliffs that rise to 189m. The east coast is relatively flat and sloping, and provides the only easy access-point for landing. The climate is cool, windy and wet. These islands were largely unaffected by whalers and sealers in the 19th C.

The Snares Islands are one of five sub-Antarctic island groups that were listed with UNESCO World Heritage in 1998, because of their unique flora and fauna and absence of introduced terrestrial mammals such as rats and rabbits. Landing on the islands is generally prohibited or by special research permit only. The vegetation is low forest and peat cover. There are an estimated 6 million Sooty Shearwaters nesting on the Snares Islands (that’s 3 birds for every square metre!). Other bird life include Snares penguin, Snares snipe and Snares tomtit.

The Snares are the only subantarctic island group that were never inhabited by humans, that is if we exclude the unbelievable story of four convict stowaways who involuntarily spent a while there. The Snares are amazing as more birds nest on these small islands than there are sea birds around the entire British Isles. Cruising in the sheltered bays you should see the endemic Snares Crested Penguins, Tomtit, Fernbird, Cape Pigeons, and Antarctic Terns, to name but a few. It is truly a unique experience to watch sea birds using virtually every square metre of land for nesting and resting.
