Mercury Bay lying in the furthest reaches of New Zealand's Coromandel Peninsula, remains relatively untouched by civilisation, but offers a wide range of activities and together with its naturally friendly and helpful people, it is an idyllic port of call. There are numerous places of interest to visit, so perhaps hire a car, take a tour, or visit the Information Centre at Whitianga, the main town, and simply explore.

No visit to Mercury Bay can possibly be complete without visiting Hot Water Beach. Here a subterranean source of fresh, hot water comes to the surface. During low tide, you can dig in the beach sand to capture a pool of this water and create your own spa. The Marine Reserve offers unparalleled swimming, diving/snorkeling, kayaking and trekking. If energetic visit Cathedral Cove, examine the artefacts on the Mercury Bay Craft Trail, or any of the many other fascinating walks.

If you enjoy creating works of art, then a visit to the Bone Studio offers classes to assist visitors to create their own mementos carved from bone. The Gallery also displays a "mini-museum" of New Zealand carving styles, tools and materials. Also on offer are kayaking, opportunities to commune with the birds and playful dolphins, safe boat scenic fishing, diving, or hire a small vessel to explore Mercury Bay and the Great Mercury Islands. You will understand why locals call it New Zealand's best kept secret!
