Port Fitzroy is situated on the NW coast of Great Barrier Island, the fourth largest island of New Zealand, 90 km to the NE of Auckland. All visitors enjoy Great Barrier Island’s peace and tranquillity. With its numerous bays and inlets, this is one of the best natural harbours in New Zealand. Port Fitzroy has always been a mecca for yachts, launches and commercial craft. Its two deep narrow entrances make the port landlocked and a safe harbour even in the worst of storms.

The remote island is now inhabited by a small population of around a thousand people, mostly living from farming and tourism. The majority of the diverse environments of the island are administered as a nature reserve by the Department of Conservation.
