Enderby Island is part of the Auckland Islands. These have been called one of the bleakest places on Earth, as it is situated in the sub-Antarctic region, 465km south of New Zealand. The islands are tiny, with Auckland Island itself the largest island of the group, being only 43km long by 24 wide. Nevertheless, all the islands result in an amazing variety of unusual and rare wildlife, as well as some of the most ferocious weather on the planet. Each year in the 2000s about five cruise ships visit the sub-Antarctic islands (50 deg. South) and bring tourists to enjoy the flora and fauna.

Of the five islands, only Campbell, Auckland, and Enderby are open to visitors. Enderby Island is the most popular island of the group. A history of the Auckland Islands would not be complete without a mention of the eight known ships wrecked on and around its unforgiving shores. The General Grant, with its hold full of gold, was probably the most famous of these. The most obvious sign of the influence of animals are the extensive grassland areas on Enderby Island and the rooted up areas on the Aucklands, where pigs have been digging for worms and fly larvae.

Interestingly, the Auckland Islands are made up of the remains of two ancient volcanoes that have been subsequently cut by glaciers. It is notable for its steep cliffs and rugged terrain, which rise over 600m. Visitors can look forward to seeing New Zealand sea lions and yellow-eyed penguins at Enderby Island; and White-capped, Mollymawk (albatross colony) at the main Auckland Island. On average, it rains 27 days a month, the winds usually blow harder than 60 kph, and temperatures rarely reach higher than 15 deg.C.
