Gravdal Port is part of Norway’s Lofoten Archipelago, lying entirely above the Arctic Circle. The Islands are the western remnants of great mountains that were worn away by glaciers, and in summer their spectacular sky-piercing architecture puts this archipelago in a league of its own. The unique and simple village of Gravdal is situated on the island of Vestvagoy. The village of just 1600 inhabitants has its own kindergarten and primary school, the Lofoten Hospital, and the Nordland School of Fisheries. Amazingly, the village is so quiet that tourists can hear the ringing of the school’s traditional bell.

Gravdal is the gateway to Lofoten for cruise ships, and indeed roads link all the islands across to the mainland. The picturesque light house of Gravdal stands in the Buknes Bay area of the village. The Buksnes Church, built in 1905, illustrates the ‘Dragon Style’ of Norwegian architecture: very Viking, Norse, and mediaeval – the main tourist attraction. There is also the historical Monument to the Ancient Vikings. To unwind, relax and commune with nature, one can also go to the popular Gravdal Beach. Interestingly, visitors may also enjoy a change by visiting the local bowling alley.

The region is noted for its wide species of birds and fowls including the local eider duck, sea eagles and kittiwakes, so that bird-watching is a must-do activity. With lively fishing hamlets below steep mountains, white sandy beaches and lakes for fishing, hiking is highly recommended. Certainly, Gravdal’s simplicity bestows ample relaxation opportunities on its visitors.
