Brønnøysund is “the coastal town in the middle of Norway”, adjacent to the North Sea and just below the Arctic Circle. Brønnøysund sits on a narrow peninsula on the mainland surrounded by islands and water. Its population is just 5000. Commerce here is busy, including fishing, hydroponics, limestone mining, wood processing, and tourism. Facing the waterfront are the white and blue buildings of The Brønnøysund Register Centre, which develops and operates many of the nation's most important registers and electronic solutions. Also based here is Torghatten ASA, a well-known Norwegian shipping company. Drive there over the Brønnøysund Bridge.

Lokalmatbutikken is one of the places to get your local food. Enjoy the impressive selection of spices and all sorts of edible souvenirs. While you are there, sit down in the small cafe or in the pub (which is next door) and try a beer or cider from a wide range of products. The owners will guide you if you want to try something new. A similar thing to do in Brønnøysund is to visit its new shopping centre. There are about 30 shops and a bank. On offer are clothing, electrical, jewellery, gifts, and includes a supermarket underneath, where there is also a car park.

Ten kilometres to the SSW of Brønnøysund is Torghatten, the legendary island-mountain which has an amazing square hole E-W through its middle. You might feel very small, indeed, as you walk through the 160 m long, 15-20 m wide and 35 m tall tunnel, naturally formed by powerful natural forces. A 30-minute walk along a well-marked path takes you up there. The huge hole, or natural tunnel was created during the ice ages. Ice and water slowly eroded the looser rock strata, leaving the harder rock on top of the mountain, which resisted erosion. The result was a hole as big as a mighty cathedral.
