Kinderdijk is a small village at a distance of only 16 km from Rotterdam and a little less than 10 km from the city border of the oldest city in Holland, Dordrecht. It lies at the confluence of the Lek and Noord rivers. The local scenery is spectacular, perhaps viewed from a hop-on-hop-off canal tour. This is a unique destination in that it has a large concentration of 19 old windmills – some from as far back as the 1500s – in the Netherlands. Indeed it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as it is an outstanding man-made landscape that bears powerful testimony to human ingenuity and fortitude over nearly a millennium.

The mills were used to drain water from the low-lying ‘polders’ surrounded by dykes, and not for grinding flour; but are now replaced by diesel pumps. During the tourist season one of the windmills is operational and provides an insight to the lifestyle in that time period. If visiting in the second full week of September the village’s windmills are lit up at night for what is known as ‘Mills in floodlight’, truly an amazing spectacle. Be sure to have your picture taken in one of the most photographed spots of Holland.

Another highlight in the area is National Park De Biesbosch, a unique freshwater tidal area with very special plants and wildlife. It is home to freshwater birds and beavers. Activities include walking, sailing, canoeing, cycling, fishing, birdwatching, horse riding, and swimming. Kinderdijk village highlights the outstanding contribution of the Dutch to the technology of handling water. These works began in the Middle Ages and have continued uninterrupted till now. Apart from the beautifully preserved windmills, one can appreciate the the typical features associated with this technology, the dykes, reservoirs, pumping stations, and the necessary administrative buildings.
