It's been lovely to be able to speak directly to the lass I first booked with. Lisa is friendly and professional and would take time for me instead of rushing me off the phone."

Harlingen is a city in the northern Netherlands in the province of Friesland at the Wadden Sea. The Wadden Sea is bounded against the Atlantic by the 460km length of the Wadden Archipelago, and continental Europe. The sea forms a shallow body of water with tidal flats and wetlands. Ships follow a narrow channel from the North Sea to Harlingen. The port caters for large shipping, fishing ships, tall sailing ships when the season draws them, and canals from the 12th C that dissect the city are filled with recreational vessels. Today, most shipping is of salt from the local factory.

Explore the city with its canals, alleys and bridges on foot, by bicycle, bus or train. The waterfront presents a relaxing view of old and new ships sailing in and out, three harbours, old Dutch architecture, restaurants and cafés. There are many monuments (see the Stone Man south of town on the coast); the Blauwe Hand of 1647 a preserved warehouse; and the Harlingen Lighthouse, now a hotel. For a difference, rent a motor boat (Ouweseun Boat rental) and navigate canals for 3 hours or so through the countryside. Guided boat tours navigate the canals and venture out to sea, to give an overview of Harlingen and Friesland.

Het Hannemahuis Museum displays the history of Harlingen – of its famous earthenware tiles, silver articles, gin distillery and whaling ships. Harlinger Pottery Museum is a national monument to the blooming pottery production in the Frisian cities in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Check beforehand to see if it is open. The blue artwork on white tiles is so well recognized.
