Namibe is the capital city of Namibe Province in modern day Angola. It is a coastal desert city located in SW Angola, and was founded in 1840 by the Portuguese colonial administration. Namibe has a cool dry climate and desert vegetation due to its proximity to the Namibe Desert. Interestingly, the ocean, desert, and savannah meet in the province of Namibe, thus providing breathtaking scenery and probably the best climate on the Angolan coast. With an average temperature of 21°C. The Namibe Desert provides a great opportunity to see wildlife, whilst the coast provides spectacular beaches. The tribes who inhabit the Namibe region are the Koysan and Negro, while the most widely spoken language is Portuguese.

The most spectacular aspect of Namibe is Iona National Park. Within the Park you can visit the district of Espinheira and watch the various wild species such as oryx, zebra, gazelle and ostrich. Close to the mouth of the river Cunene you will find some constructions of unknown origin, and admire desert scenery of rare beauty. The ocean itself contains various wildlife species, ranging from turtles, dolphins, sharks, pelicans and flamingos. Other places of interest include: many churches, such as the Quipola Chapel and - just 2km away - the Praia Amelia Chapel; and many fortresses, once used by slaves who were congregated there before embarking for the Americas.
