Banana Island is an artificial island of less than one square mile, situated in Lagos Lagoon, in the city of Lagos, Nigeria. The island, ‘Skyscraper City’, is home to up-market modern houses, apartment buildings and infrastructure. Actually Banana Island is surrounded on only three sides by water, being joined to the cities of Ikoyi and Lagos as one island. Vessels enter the large Lagos Lagoon from the Atlantic Ocean to a safe mooring at Banana Island.

The extended island contains many of the largest markets in Lagos, its CBD, National Museum, the central mosque, government headquarters, Tinubu Square and the Oba palace. Expect to see beautification projects, building cranes, a plethora of food outlets, and the clearance of roadside slums. This is the largest city in Africa’s most populous country.

Visitors are drawn to Nigeria’s rich culture and entertainment. Historically, the country has a heritance of civil war, famine, military dictatorships and ongoing corruption. Despite its natural resources of oil, it remains a poor country, though this will not be evident at Banana Island. Having said that, mingle, get to know the people, and enjoy your visit.
