Cruises from Mare Island

Maré is the second-largest, southernmost island of the Loyalty Islands, located in the archipelago of New Caledonia. Like the nearby island of Lifou, Maré is a ring-shaped coral reef known as an atoll, a former atoll that has been raised by 120 metres making Maré the highest island in the New Caledonian archipelago. The people of Maré, around 6,900, are mainly of Melanisan heritage who speak in their indigenous language of Nengoné. With its mysterious scenery of hanging cliffs, lush vegetation and stunning headlands, it is very rewarding for those who wish to explore the natural beauty that is Maré.

Lined with lucious coconut trees, Maré has some local stalls offering snacks, drinks and souvenirs however if the beach is calling your name, Yelele Beach has been known to be one of the most beautiful. Perfect for snorkelling and crystal clear waters, be sure to not miss out on this wonderful sight! If you happen to be on Maré Island in May, there is a local Avocado Festival to experience that you will love! Meet the locals, partake in the activities and even try some avocado based delights! Due to New Caledonia’s semi-tropical climate, it is mostly warm with comfortable temperatures all year round with the occasional rainstorm. The temperatures average around the mid 20s. It is always recommended to take a hat, water bottle and sunscreen. To access Mare, the cruise ship will anchor out at sea close to shore then a tender boat, a small enclosed boat, will ferry you to the nearby jetty. Be sure to note what time you are required back so you don’t miss the ship!
