Cruises visiting Lifou & all Lifou cruises for  2019

View Lifou 2019 cruises for 2 ships listing 2 cruises from Lifou with today's best deals!

Lifou (pop. 10,000) is the largest of the Loyalty Islands, a north-eastern Province of New Caledonia, an overseas territory of France, in the South Pacific Ocean. It lies 100 km to the east of New Caledonia mainland. Cruise ship guests are tendered to the pier at Easo. Kanak culture is most present in Lifou, which has managed to preserve its traditional authenticity. The welcoming people receive visitors as favoured guests. The island's natural wealth, consisting of long, deserted beaches and crystal-clear lagoons, make snorkelling and scuba diving very popular. With multi-coloured sea life and coral fauna not found elsewhere in the world, this is not surprising. Tourism and exports of copra, rubber, vanilla and sugarcane are the main industries.

With rocks such as the Cliffs of Jokin rising like legendary fortresses, invigorating walks such as the 30-minute walk to the Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel on the headland SW of Easo pier, are great ways to take in the glorious landscapes. Visit the local marketplace and learn about the residents' imaginary environment filled with myths and legends. If possible, get permission to visit the main 'hut' of the Hnathalo tribe, with its huge open fireplace that is set in a garden behind the chief's house. Visit the Mucaweng Vanilla Plantation (5 km from the pier) set within a beautiful forest.

Lifou's beaches are also popular destinations for watersports such as canoeing, windsurfing and sailing. You can hire single canoes and this is a great way to view the enormous cliffs from below. Other places of interest include: Luengoni Bay - on the east coast - home to a stunning turquoise lagoon with a spectacular coral rock emerging from its depths; trek deep down to Lifou's caves that include the Grotto D'Avio with its stalactites and jade waterhole; and the Devil's Cave, near the village of Tingeting, which has three huge interlinked caverns.
