Cruises visiting Hienghene & all Hienghene cruises for  2019

Hienghene, a commune in the North Province of New Caledonia in the South Pacific, is an overseas-territory of France. It is named after the large mass of rock in the bay, the silhouette of which very closely resembles a hen (‘Poule de Hienghene’). The brooding hen faces the Sphinx at the eastern side of the bay. The Sphinx, as it is covered in dense vegetation, takes a bit of imagination to recognise its shape, but the two named rock formations guard the entrance to the bay. Coconut trees, giant ferns, bamboos and luscious forest line the beaches, contrasting with the dark blue of the ocean.

A kayak trip will give you a closeup view of the black limestone formations at the mouth of the rivers and lagoon. A visit to a tribal village is a great way to be immersed in the Melanesian culture. In town visit the Cultural Centre where stand traditional Kanak houses, carved posts, a carvers' workshop, as well as an excellent small museum of Kanak arts and traditions. It even has a small library with free internet access. At the village tourism office you will doubtless find numerous activities on land and sea.

Day trips offer hikes, horse riding, and even the opportunity to take a catamaran to visit some of the islets. There are also beautiful waterfalls (La Cascade de Tao and La Cascade de Colnett), an amazing cave, a lagoon, coral reefs and deserted beaches to explore. Keep in mind local customs. Take some sarongs, banknotes and such to thank locals for welcoming you. Ask about local customs before venturing around the sights.
