Ibo Island (pop. 3,000) is one of the 32 Quirimbas Islands in the Indian Ocean off northern Mozambique. Its principal town is Vila do Ibo. The island grew as a Muslim trading port, and was one of the most ancient settlements in Mozambique. As early as 600 AD Arab traders had set up fortified trading posts along the coastline. Vasco da Gama reportedly rested on the island in 1502. The island was fortified in 1609 by the Portuguese, and in the late 18th C Portuguese colonialists built the Forts of São João Batista (1791) and San Antonio that still survive. The town was a centre for slave and ivory trade, and became the second most important in the region after Mozambique Island.

The town on Ibo has gradually de-populated and is now effectively a colonial ghost town, with dilapidated villas and crumbling, moss-covered buildings, along with mangroves, beaches, coral and palms, and silversmiths who craft exquisite, intricate, jewellery using ancient Arab techniques and tools. During low tide, take a private Dhow to the Banco D'Areia (Sand Bank), a beautiful, small sandy island in the middle of the sea. Local fishermen cast their nets along hundreds of kilometres of winding channels and mangrove lagoons from Arab style dhows. Visitors can arrange to take historical, cultural, wildlife and island-hopping tours.

Ibo Island is one of the most pristine beach destinations in the world. It lies within the Quirimbas National Park which has some of the most un-spoilt reefs in the World. Divers can enjoy some of the best diving in the world. Turtles, Dolphins, Whales are often seen on dives. The Park is also a sanctuary for the rare Dugong. The park protects 913,000 hectares of coastal forest, mangroves and coral reefs. The park contains a rich variety of marine life including sea turtles, dolphins and many species of fish.
