Sandakan is the second largest city in Sabah, East Malaysia, on the NE coast of Borneo. While perhaps being best known as the Gateway for Ecotourism in Sabah, the area is also remembered for WWII events. After its complete destruction and rebuild 1948-1955, it has become a main port for oil, tobacco, coffee, sago, and timber exports. Other economic activities include fishing, ship building, eco-tourism, and manufacturing. Sites of the Japanese airfield built by forced labour of locals and prisoners of war, the Sandakan Memorial Park, and the Japanese Cemetery are of great historical interest to visitors.

Tourist attractions in Sandakan include: Sandakan Heritage Museum; Sandakan Cultural Festival; Sandakan War Memorial; the orangutans in Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre; the three Malaysian Turtle Islands, Selingaan, Gulisaan and Bakkungan Kechil; the Kinabatangan River; and Gomantong Caves which are famous for their edible bird's nests. Other main sights today include: Agnes Keith House that is home of a well known local author; the world heritage site of St Michael's and All Angels Church built in 1897; the Crocodile Farm that houses more than 2000 reptiles; Kampung Buli Sim Sim, a fishing village built on stilts; the Sandakan Market; many mosques and temples; and the Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary.

The main shopping area in Sandakan is the Harbour Mall. To absorbs local vibes, wander around the Fishermen’s Village. Incidentally, the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre is the largest of only four in the world, and it is a delight to see these animals in their natural habitat. Signally, the town is remembered for the 260km Sandakan Death Marches to Ranau in the mountains, of which only six Australians survived of the 2345 prisoners of war. Sandakan Memorial Park is the site where the Sandakan prisoner of war camp was located.
