Ko Adang lies in the Andaman Sea 90 km off the west coast of the Thailand/Malaysia border. Its peak overshadows the dozen other islands of its immediate archipelago. Forty kilometres to the south of east is Malaysia’s resort of Langkawi. Ko Adang and 50 surrounding islands are part of Tarutao National Marine Park covering 1490 (Interestingly, Adang comes from the Malay ‘prawn’, and Tarutao means ‘oldest island.) Ko Adang’s waters historically supported fishing and pirates, and currently supports only two small settlements in addition to the Park’s headquarters. The island’s interior is thick growth to the waterline, and its perimeter studded with occasional and beautiful sandy beaches.

The small tourist island Ko Lipe lies just over one kilometre to the south of Ko Adang. Day-trippers depart from Lipe to Adang for its hiking trails, waterfalls, sandy beaches, snorkelling sites, and solitude. The Park headquarters include a visitors’ centre, bungalows and camping facilities. The main attraction is the hike to Chadoe Cliff, that presents good views of Ko Lipe to the south, and the island’s interior to the north, rising to its 680m peak. Other places of interest are the gentle Pirate’s Falls on a hiking trail to the west of Park headquarters, and Kinaree Waterfall approached by the sea on the east coast. Hire a longboat.
