Zihuatanejo, the fourth largest city in Mexico, lies on the Pacific Coast about 240km NW of Acapulco. It has developed as a tourist attraction and has kept its traditional town feel. The main attractions are the several famous beaches that surround the bay, well protected from the open ocean. Possibly the best known beach is Playa la Ropa, not only great for its swimming and restaurants, but some local hotels sponsor the turtle conservation campaign. They set up fenced-off areas into which turtle eggs are gathered and protected during incubation from August through December. Also worth visiting is the fine small Archaeological Museum that highlights Mexican culture.

The modern tourist resort of Ixtapa is just 5km away. Resorts continue to spring up, but the small-town flavour of "Zihua" remains intact. Downtown is called "El Centro," located on the north end of the bay. It still has narrow streets paved with stones or bricks. The town has a long-standing community of Swiss and Italian immigrants. Be sure to visit El Refugio de Potosi, an ecological park and wildlife rescue centre that features close encounters with local flora and fauna. While there climb the lookout tower and take in a 360 degree view of ocean, lagoon and mountains.

There are several beaches, all different and distinct in what they offer. Las Gastas Beach, reachable only by boat, is well worth exploring as it offers the opportunity to: snorkel to your heart’s content, enjoy the local food, do some surfing, or go scuba diving. Play soccer with the locals on La Madera, or walk the paseo on Playa Principal. Zihuatanejo is also well known for excellent fishing. On a fishing charter, you will have Pacific bottlenose dolphins swimming along-side, and see sea turtles, various species of birds, and possibly encounter jumping rays or even humpback whales.
