Los Islotes (The Islets) are a group of small rocky islands in the Gulf of California (or, Sea of Cortez), off the Baja California Peninsula. They lie 50 km north of the Mexican city of La Paz. The Sea is home to one third of the planet’s marine mammals, that include orcas, blue whales, dolphins immense shoals of leaping mobula rays, and sea lions. Divers or snorkelers can meet the latter by the hundreds at the rocky outcrops of Los Islotes. The ochre rocks are covered with basking sea lions, and one can swim among these playful animals. Jacques Cousteau famously called it “the world’s aquarium”.

The rock formations include a natural arch, and birdlife that includes pelicans, boobies and red-chested frigate birds. Under water are golden corals, brightly coloured angel fish, sea horses, giant clams, and scarlet crabs. Los Islotes is regularly featured in the diving press as one of the top ten dive sites in the world. The islets receive more visitors than almost any other island in the Sea of Cortez. The sea lions are the number one attraction, especially the playful pups that interact with swimmers.

The sea is also home to bottlenose dolphins, whale sharks, and a variety of whales. The waters are not so warm, so select appropriate equipment for diving.
