Comino (Maltese: Kemmuna) is a small island sandwiched between the larger islands of Gozo and Malta, all part of the Maltese archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea. Sicily is 80 km to the north, and Tripoli (Libya) in Africa 350 due south. Named after the herb cumin that one flourished there, the island is only 3.5, and home to just a handful of permanent residents. Visitors come for the serenity, and navigate the numerous bays and foreshores that enclose clear blue waters. This island bird sanctuary is sparsely vegetated with some grass and low shrubs, and its gentle hills rise to 60 m. Limestone cliff and cave formations around the island are quite striking, and used historically as pirate lairs and an island prison.

St Mary’s Tower (1618) in the centre-south of the island stands out as an early-warning beacon, and is breaching by walking tours of the island. Additionally, around the island, you will come across a chapel, old military battery, modern hotel and private beach, holiday bungalows, and police station. To the NW of Comino is the Blue Lagoon, with its beautiful cyan waters and white sandy base, and on the far side of the lagoon is the small Cominotto Island. The lagoon is very popular with photographers, divers and tour boats. Notably, the island was used in film sets for Troy, and The Count of Monte Cristo.
