Montserrat (‘Serrated Mountain’), also known as the ‘Emerald Isle of the Caribbean’, is a lush green volcanic island in the Leeward Islands of the NE Caribbean. It is a British Overseas Territory. The island is 16.5km N-S and10kmE-W, and one-third of its area is covered by lava flows from the 1995-2000 eruptions of Soufrière Hills volcano (French: “sulfur outlet”; 915m). The eruptions buried most of the capital Plymouth, and two-thirds of the population left the island. An exclusion zone exists in some areas. Nevertheless, it is still home to a thriving and vibrant community in the north. Obtain special permission to tour the volcano area in the south – a must-do.

The island was named by Christopher Columbus in 1493 on his second voyage. Irish settlers came in 1632, and Irish ancestry complemented the island’s similarity to Ireland’s coastline. Early colonists produced sugar and cotton based on African slave labour. Today English is the language, and the 5200 inhabitants have British citizenship. Throughout northern Montserrat you will be surrounded by delightful verdant scenes and spectacular coastal vistas. Visitors can hike the nine world-class trails, or maybe dive, snorkel and kayak the volcano-inspired waters, or simply relax on the secluded black sand beaches with the friendly residents.

The island has been popular with well-known musicians (including Dire Straits, Elton John, Michael Jackson and The Rolling Stones) who often went there to record at AIR studios. A new town and port are being developed at Little Bay, on the NW coast of the island. Visit the Little Bay Town development and see the Cultural Centre and public market, and the evidence of continual new structures and boulevards that are returning. The island offers a unique and memorable experience as you view the buried capital city, Plymouth, a modern-day Pompeii, from the top of Garibaldi Hill in Isles Bay. Montserrat's national dish is a thick goat meat stew served with crusty bread rolls.
