Anse Mitan (Mitan Cove) is located just to the west of the town of Les Trois-Îlets, on the SW coast of the island Martinique, a French region in the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean Sea. The cove is adjacent to Pointe du Bout (‘Land’s End’), in one of the most popular tourist destinations on the island. The cove has a half-kilometre curved and narrow sandy beach with calm water, backing onto a 200m wide isthmus. On the other side is the Bay of Fort-de-France. A short walk north takes you to the Point, and the small 100-berth marina. This is a seaside resort area, popular with boaters, shoppers, and café-latte lovers.

The beach – unshaded, so wear a hat – with white sand and clear waters, is backed by terraced restaurants, and at night young people enjoying their local music. The water is warm and good for snorkeling. From Anse Mitan take a ferry 5 km to the capital Forte de France where the large cruise ships dock, or just take a local half-day sailing excursion to view the palm trees and white sand beaches. Locals speak French of course, and little English, so communicate with a smart phone translation app.

A road from Anse Mitan to the SE takes you three kilometres to the town of Trois-Islets, the birthplace of Joséphine, the empress of France and wife of Napoleon Bonaparte. Visit the Musée de la Pagerie, but only the foundation of Josephine’s home remains. The former kitchen did survive, and now contains quite an interesting assortment of items related to Josephine. There are also extensive remains of a sugar factory, above which Josephine lived with her family after the great house burned. There’s a two acre reconstructed slave village where you can learn of the hardships that slaves on the island endured, while also learning about how their traditions still play an important role in the island's heritage today
