Kyunn Mee Gee is an island in the southern Mergui Archipelago, Myanmar. One of 800 or so islands, it is in the Andaman Sea, part of the Indian Ocean. It is reached by sailing boat or power boat from Kawthaung, the southernmost city of Myanmar on the mainland, adjacent to the border with Thailand. Kyunn Mee Gee is uninhabited, lowset, and covered with tropical forest. As with all islands in this region, visitors love the solitude, clear water, white beaches, coral reefs, sunsets, and opportunities for swimming, snorkelling, diving and kayaking.

On shore visitors spend their time on the beaches. But inland they’ll find monitor lizards, pythons, civets, chevrotains, gibbons and crab-eating macaques. Up in the air, the colourful diversity is perhaps even greater: you can see hornbills, white-bellied sea eagles, while kites, kingfishers, eastern reef herons, emerald doves, to name but a few. The itinerant inhabitants of these islands are occasional fishermen who may have planted coconut trees on areas they have cleared.

On this island or nearby islands seek out a Moken (also known as Salone or sea gypsie) village. Moken lead a nomadic, sea-based life, are masters of free diving and skilful at traditional boat building. Find out about their unique culture, changing today as some are removed to the mainland.
