Safi, considered by many to be the pottery capital of Morocco, is one of the most charming and beautiful cities located on the Atlantic coast in western Morocco. Most tourists focus on experiencing the local colour and tradition of the old town and potters’ quarter sprawling on the hills above, with dozens of whitewashed earthen kilns and chimneys. The old walled city is home to Dar el Babar - the Castle of the Sea - that was once the residence of governors and sultans, and is still furnished with 17th C canons.

Dominating the eastern side of the Medina is Kechla, a massive defensive structure with living quarters, gunnery platforms and ramparts. It housed the town’s modern prison until 1990 but it has now been restored as the National Ceramic Museum. Exhibits include a collection of local ceramics as well as pottery from Fez and Meknes. In the Medina proper is a remnant of the Portuguese in Safi, the so-called Portuguese Cathedral. The cathedral is only partially built as the Portuguese withdrew from the city. There is only the choir gallery and just one vaulted hall left standing. Beyond these sights, head to Rue du Socco - the main street in the Medina - for the main souks and stalls and to absorb the local culture.

The central medina is a traditional Moroccan market. It is closely affiliated with pottery, and throughout the market vases, plates and other items are all made from clay and are popular with tourists. Safi has a beach, although it is recommended to travel north along the coastal road (Sidi Bouzid) towards Oualidia, where stretches of beaches run all the way along the route. Also on offer are its superb surfing and its delicious oysters. Excursions to the Gorani Cave with its mysterious rock paintings can also be taken.
