Tripoli is the capital and largest city in Libya. Founded in the 1st millennium B.C., Tripoli today is located in the NW part of the country on the edge of the desert, on a point of rocky land projecting into the Mediterranean and forming a bay. It has distinctive old and new quarters. The old quarter, the Medina, still retains much of its old-world ambience as numerous historical structures have survived. These include the Marcus Aurelius triumphal arch (2nd century A.D.), mosques of Gurgi and Karamanli and the EnNaqah Mosque (camel mosque).

The city skyline is dominated by the Red Castle Museum, a vast palace complex on the outskirts of the Medina that is a fascinating place to explore. Climb the old city walls for some great city views and visit the three gates that provide entry to the old town. There are two other archaeological sites, the Leptis Magna - an extensive area of the Roman Empire, and the historic site of Sabratha that was rebuilt in the 2nd and 3rd centuries. Visit the bazaar for some fine jewellery and clothes.

There are also a number of buildings constructed by the Italian colonial rulers. These included the Royal Miramare Theatre, next to the Red Castle, and the Tripoli Railway Central Station. Tripoli Cathedral constructed by the Italian colonial authorities during the 1920s, was converted into a mosque in the early 1970s. The building was extensively remodelled at this time.
